Early Years: Where we started...

5.jpgIn the early years of the church, a group of eight believers met in homes in the local area. It wasn't until around 1850 that Hamacher's Meeting House was constructed for their faithful group of believers to worship in. This is believed to be the first church constructed in Wilmot Township and laid the groundwork for the church that we know today.

Wilmot Centre as we know it has undergone many changes over its more than 160 years of existence. From the size of our congregation, to the building where we worship, to our denominational affiliation, we look very different today than we did in the 1830's.

Early Visionaries...

Menno L. Wing was one of the early visionaries of our church. He became Pastor of Zion Evangelical Church in Berlin (Kitchener) around 1912, which at that time was in charge of overseeing churches in the surrounding area. Menno L. Wing also formed the first Young People's Alliance in 1892, recognizing the need to nurture youth and bring them to the Lord. This youth focus is still evident today at Wilmot Centre, shown by the full front rows of youth every Sunday and our busy youth programs throughout the week.

Road to Missionary Affiliation (R)

Wilmot Centre has not always been a Missionary church. In 1946 there was a union between the Evangelical Association and the United Brethren in Christ and from the Wilmot Centre Evangelical United Brethren church emerged. In 1968, Wilmot Centre Congregation, as it had come to be known, rejected the proposed amalgamation of the United church over land ownership issues. In 1969 Wilmot Centre joined the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada and has grown under the different leaderships of Glenn Fretz, Glenn Gibson, and Donald Mills.
